Market context

The market SmoothME operates in.

Bakery and cafe brands trade on ritual. The morning coffee, the Saturday pastry, the mid-afternoon stop - the business is a set of dayparts, each with a different audience and a different reason to walk in.

Craft credentials matter here more than in any other F&B niche. Sourdough, roast, provenance and technique are the story, but they only carry value if the brand makes them legible to people who are not enthusiasts.

Common challenges in bakery, cafe and daypart venues

  1. 01

    Quiet dayparts

Morning sells itself. Late morning and afternoon need designed reasons to visit, not discounts.

  2. 02

    Explaining craft without lecturing

Process is the differentiator and the fastest way to lose a general audience. It has to be shown, not explained.

  3. 03

    Same-street substitution

Coffee is available every fifty metres. Without a distinct character, the choice comes down to proximity.

  4. 04

    Retail, cabinet and screen mismatch

Packaging, in-store signage and the feed are usually designed separately, so the brand looks like three brands.

  5. 05

    Ingredient cost pressure

Input costs have climbed for five consecutive years. Raising prices without a brand that justifies them costs footfall.

How we answer it: We build the brand world across cabinet, packaging and feed, then plan content by daypart instead of by post count. See our food & beverage practice.
